Falling down and letting handsome Brits pick me back up again.
Today was my first actual day of work, although, if I didn’t have a passport meeting tomorrow, I would leave work at 4:30 to attend pub, which is like British prayer, but more social and less likely to allow Irish people (who supposedly drink more than the English).
After making an “ahss” (I haven’t heard anyone say “arse” yet, but I am now an expert on the Northwest London pronunciation of a very few key phrases) of myself on the telly - ringing people and having to have them repeat telly numbuhs and whatnot, I spent nearly all day on the phone with the more unfortunate than not English bureaucracy.
And while I champion America and wear my American flag lapel pin to work everyday, I must concede Greater London’s bureaucratic system is far better than ours (at circumventing issues and getting me to call the same three offices for four hours). At one point, I was told I should file a FOIA. They didn’t bring over the Bill of Rights (thus Anti-social behaviour orders) but they did bring the FOIA.
Angrily and somewhat manically, I typed away so someone somewhere would have to suffer pulling the tedious and not-so-secret information I need from the top of a very high bookshelf in a very dark room. FOIA that!
But, after a long day at work, I was relieved to get to the Overground and begin my travail to Islington, scone meat scone. Down the concrete stairs, I took a bit of a spill, and, because I want to experience British culture, I was wearing three and a half inch heels.
Fortunately, anonymous attractive older British man helped me ‘op’ to my beautifully dressed feet and walked with me (probably to make sure I didn’t fall again, leaving myself susceptible to stab wounds or guncrime) the rest of the way to Willesden Junction. Cheers, anonymous attractive older British man! You are no Prince William, but you still fly.
Things I have learned:
-Hackney is nowhere near Angel on the bus routes.
Answers I still seek:
-Will I ever find something in one try?
Still perfecting balance,
Lindsey
